With only 6 luxury cottages, the Mfangano Island Camp is set among gnarled fig trees and tropical gardens on a tiny island in Lake Victoria.
This provides a peaceful lakeside atmosphere in this small exclusive Camp. The camp is part of the Governor’s Camp Group and the standards are typically luxurious and exclusive. Children are welcome. To get to the camp, there are charter flights to the local airstrip (followed by a short boat ride to the camp), or guests can drive from Nairobi to Kisumu, followed by a short charter flight or a longer boat ride. Another option is to travel by car to Mbita, where they will be met by a boat. The resort is closed in April and May.
Ask for Cottage 1 (honeymooner’s suite) or Cottage 6, they offer magical views and are exquisitely designed!
The camp consists of six recently renovated cottages, crafted of clay and banana thatch. The cottages are open, with views of the lake. Each room has a private verandah with sun loungers and views of Lake Victoria. The cottages are furnished with four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, and traditionally-styled seating. There are four double cottages and two twin cottages. The honeymoon suite features stunning views of the lake from the bed. The cottages all have bathrooms with a bath and shower, a flush toilet, and a sink, and have hot and cold running water.
Restaurants & Bars
Full board is included in the rates. The meals include fresh seafood and salads, and are accompanied by wine. They are served in the dining room, which has its own bar and overlooks the lake. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. Room service is available upon request, and guests are served morning tea or coffee in their rooms with the wakeup call.
There is a “horizon” stone swimming pool on the lakeshore for guests to enjoy. The camp is perfectly situated for bird watching, with a number of native species including sea birds. Bird watching excursions are also offered (including day trips via aircraft to Kakemega Forest), as are boat rides, fishing expeditions, guided walks, and a variety of water sports. There are prehistoric caves nearby and guests can visit the Nyakweri village and primary school. The property has its own generator. Laundry is included in the rate. There is no internet service; the property has radio contact with other camps, and a satellite telephone. Luggage is restricted due to the travel in small aircraft; please see the property’s website for more information.
