The Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge is located in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, on the border of the Tsavo West National Park.
This luxury resort is comprised of round structures set on stilts, topped with conical thatched roofs. The sanctuary is home to hundreds of species of birds and more than 50 species of mammals that drink at the waterholes near the resort, which are lit at night. Guests can view the wildlife up close from the resort’s underground bunker, connected by tunnel with the resort. Children must be eight years or older to stay at the lodge. The property is a one-hour flight from Nairobi, and is also accessible from Mombasa by charter flight. Guests can also reach the resort by motor vehicle; it is about a 6 hour drive from Nairobi. The lodge is part of the Sarova chain, and guests can take advantage of facilities at the nearby Sarova Taita Hills Lodge.
There are ninety-six guest-rooms, furnished with double, twin or triple beds. Each is set on stilts and overlooks a waterhole. The rooms are linked by elevated walkways to each other and to the main lodge. The décor includes whitewashed walls and African textiles. Mosquito nets are draped at the sides of the beds. The rooms all have private en-suite bathrooms with showers and toilets, and running hot and cold water. There are electrical outlets in the bathrooms.
Restaurants & Bars
The lodge’s restaurant and bar also overlook the game sanctuary’s watering holes. The main Bura Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet-style. Guests can choose from African, Asian or European items, and these always include vegetarian options. There is also a dessert buffet. The restaurant can accommodate dietary requirements; guests may want to notify them in advance. The meals incorporate vegetables and herbs from the Sarova Taita Hills Lodge, which is nearby. The Vuria Bar has a shaded terrace, and serves coffee and alcoholic beverages. Guests can also enjoy a champagne cooked breakfast in the wild or a barbeque bush dinner accompanied by live local music. The lodge can provide picnics for day-long excursions.
Guests can enjoy controlled game drives through the sanctuary in the lodge’s vehicles, with experienced guides; please note that some areas are closed to vehicles for ecological reasons and to ensure the safety of the animals. There are game drives in the early morning and the late afternoon, as well as night drives illuminated with spotlights. All game drives are led by trained rangers, who also lead nature walks with an ecological emphasis. Nightly talks by local ecologists or rangers can be arranged upon request. Guests can also visit a local African village or other nature sanctuaries. Guests can use the swimming pool at the nearby Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge, and visit its gift shop.
