It’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it! Many houses in Kenya have a septic tank which is where all your household waste goes to (as opposed to open sewers where the waste goes into).
Once the tank fills up, usually after a few years, the septic tank will need to be emptied and that’s where you local “exhauster” team comes in!
The place to go in Nairobi is Dagoretti corner where you’ll find trucks carrying clean water and exhauster trucks hanging out by the Petrol Station opposite the Junction.
If you can’t find the trucks, just ask someone at the Petrol Station and they will usually be happy to send a runner to go and find the person you need. It costs about $100 for them to empty your tank and, depending on where your house is located, that should usually be the total cost of the service.
