Lake Elementaita is a shallow soda lake found between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru close to a small town called Gilgil.
It is part of a chain of seven lakes along the Great Rift Valley. The lake has blue-green algae and attracts a variety of wildlife including zebra, gazelle, eland and warthog which are often seen on the shores of L ake Elementaita. Lake Elementaita has over 400 bird species residing in the area which includes flamingoes (the Greater and Lesser varieties). Tilapia were introduced to the lake in 1962 and since that time the flamingo population has declined. Part of the reason is dues to encroachment from human populations in the area. Another reason is due to the tilapia since they attract fish-eating birds which feed upon the flamingo eggs and chicks. In the past, Lake Elementaita used to attract over a million flamingos and other birds; however, most have now migrated to other Lakes such as Lake Natron in Tanzania.
