Silole Sanctuary

185091_10152206665290532_1773453204_nJust an hour’s drive from the city, the Silole Sanctuary consists of four hundred acres of private land adjoining the Nairobi National Park.

It offers medium budget cottages, tented camps and a 3-bedroom house. It is located within a landscape of rolling plains situated between the gorges of the Embakasi and Kiserian Rivers. The Sanctuary is a community project set up by like-minded folks living on the southern boundary of the Nairobi National Park, the last pristine corner of the Athi – Kapiti Ecosystem.

Facilities
Things to do in the Sanctuary include walking, swimming at the Masaai Lodge pool, rock climbing in the rocky river gorges, bird-watching and game-driving in the Nairobi National Park, which is accessible through the Masaai Gate. There is a good supply of water here and a solar system which is backed up by a generator

Accommodation
Accommodation in Silole Sanctuary consists of the Masaai Lodge, Silole Villas and Silole Cottage. The Masaai Lodge is a 35 bed lodge situated on a cliff-edge overlooking the Embakasi River with views over the Nairobi National Park. Silole Villa is a very private 3 bedroom house with views over the Nairobi National Park set in its own six acres within the Silole Sanctuary. Silole Cottage is a 2 bedroom thatched cottage with views over the rolling plains of the Nairobi National Park.

Recommended for
If you are looking for an excuse to get away from the city routine without travelling far distances, this is an ideal location.

Location
The park is home to 60 species of mammal, many birds and a rich diversity of flora. Various habitats within the sanctuary include riverine forest, grassland plain and valley thicket. Masaai guides are available to take the guests walking in the sanctuary where they can see a variety of flora and fauna at close quarters. Security in the Sanctuary is good, with day and night policemen discreetly on duty and the manager on the adjoining property.


Local Tip
n the dry season, the roads are fine, but during the Rains you might like to use a 4 WD vehicle to get to the Sanctuary and/or the Park.

Directions: The best way to get to the Sanctuary is through the Masaai Gate which is to the south end of the Park. Otherwise drive down the Magadi Road from Bomas of Kenya on the Langata road and turn first left off the tarmac, it is sign boarded to Nazarene University and Masaai Lodge. Then just keep going to the end of the murram road for about 6 kilometers until you reach Masaai Lodge. The turn off to Silole Villa & Silole Cottage is on the right immediately before the Masaai Lodge Gate.
